Maya Angelou Doc ‘And Still I Rise’ Opened This Month in Select Theaters

October 22, 2016

The first documentary about late poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou arrived in select theaters across the country this month following a successful one-theater run in Chicago.

“Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise,” from directors Bob Hercules and Rita Coburn Whack, now opened in Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco on October 14 via American Masters Pictures.

The documentary tells Angelou’s life story through home movies, footage, archival photos and videos and through her own narration. It premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and won the Audience Award at the AFI Docs.

The film features interviews with Cicely Tyson, Oprah Winfrey, Quincy Jones, Alfre Woodard, Common, John Singleton, Angelou’s son Guy Johnson, President Bill Clinton and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

The doc’s title is taken from Angelou’s third volume of poetry and the name of one of her most inspirational poems.
